The Portuguese Golden Visa, officially designated Residence Permit for Investment Activity, offers the investor and his family the advantage of living, studying and working in a safe environment with access to the best education and health services, and allows free movement through the 26 countries that constitute the Schengen area, without the need for a visa.
The investor has the opportunity to apply for citizenship and a European passport 5 years after the approval of the Golden Visa. The citizenship is lifelong and can be passed on to following generations.
In October 2023, a significant shift took place with the removal of real estate as a viable investment option for the Golden Visa program. Despite this change, the Golden Visa initiative remains one of the most competitive and attractive pathways for individuals aspiring to attain European citizenship.
Starting October 2023, the Portuguese government has revised the Golden Visa requirements. To obtain this sought-after opportunity, clients must make and sustain an investment excluding real estate for at least 5 years. Within this period, a minimum stay of 7 days per year in Portugal is mandatory. Clients are given the flexibility to select one of the following investment options:
– Minimum investment of €500,000 Investment in Private Equity Funds. Funds are supervised by the Government, and the total investment can be diversified between several funds.
– Minimum investment of €500,000 in creating or becoming part of companies registered in Portugal, through investing in share capital and generating at least 5 jobs.
– Minimum contribution of €250,000 to recovery or maintenance of national cultural heritage or artistic production (€200,000 in a low-density area)
– Minimum contribution of €500,000 to scientific research activities of recognized public or private research entities (€400,000 in a low-density area).
